Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing bunch of third graders a ta high needs school in Nevada where we focus on a STEAM curriculum. This is my 14th year teaching! This year we return to in-person teaching and learning after a year of distance learning. Many students face challenges at home that most adults could only imagine experiencing. They look at our classroom as an escape from the worries at home and welcome the opportunities that the classroom, their teacher, and peers bring them. I am excited to be able to bring hands-on and group activities back to my students. My motto is "Kids First" and I strive to go above and beyond each day to live by this motto and do all I can do to help them. My students are curious, loving, and are always wanting more! The students love our new hands-on science lessons and are willing to go the extra mile for one of their own peers. I would like to challenge them personally and academically more with much needed materials.

My Project

My 3rd grade class utilizes a guided reading program called Renaissance Readers. Students use the program with self-selected books on their independent reading level to increase their reading skills in a variety of genres along with progressing vocabulary, stamina and rigor. This purchase of new nonfiction books will assist my students in having more exposure to nonfiction text and text features. Nonfiction text allows my students to travel to places and experience things that they may never encounter in person. Reading more nonfiction text will also help to prepare them for the common core assessments which are heavily based on nonfiction text and academic vocabulary. Many students consider reading nonfiction to be on a task but with a wide variety of nonfiction topics in my classroom library more students will get hooked on reading this genre of books. They will become more engaged in their reading and learning if the topic is of interest to them. With the addition of these books to my classroom you will be helping my students reach their full potential and become readers who read to learn.
