This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a pre-K teacher in Brownsville. I have a group of inquisitive 4-5 year olds. I have been given the privilege of having a "garden" in our school lawn. This is an incredible gift for my students, as many of them live in apartments and do not have access to a real garden. When we have planting projects, many of their plants do not survive because there is nowhere to replant them.
My students are very eager to learn about plants and how they grow. They have learned this year how some vegetables are grown and how they provide fruits and vegetables for us to eat. They are excited to show me where the roots, stem, leaves and flowers are. I am as excited as my students are to learn about the cycle of a plant. I have shovels, hoes and rakes ready for my students, unfortunately we do not have the necessary supplies to plant and take care of the garden after the long winter months.
The proposed resources that I am asking for will provide my students and their families the needed materials to replant the grass, prune the shrubbery that is currently in the garden, plant new flowers and most importantly provide a class garden, that will hopefully be enjoyed by many for months to come. It will also help my students learn how to take care of a garden and learn how to work together.
Supporting this project will allow children, who do not have a garden in their homes or community, the opportunity to be gardeners. You will empower them to make a positive change in their lives and community, as develop a love for nature. Creating and maintaining the garden would also impact the school and community by having my students be proud of something in their community that they helped to create. It will also help to create an exciting new learning environment for all involved.
