Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students view each day as an opportunity to learn and explore the world around them. They develop their minds with new skills every day. My incredible students are filled to the brim with energy and enthusiasm for learning. My school is Title I and located in a low socioeconomic community with limited resources. All of my students receive free school lunch and are classified as English language learners. As part of a dual language program, my students must meet grade level standards in both English and Spanish. As a result, my students must be organized and able to quickly access materials for the appropriate language and activities of the day.
My Project
My students are obsessed with Star Wars. They love the films and books. They wish for lightsabers and droids. However, they don't know that much of the technology in Star Wars can be applied in real life computer programs and STEM activities. To them, robots and droids are as inaccessible as Alderaan or Tatooine. Coding and STEM skills are becoming more important than ever, in order for my students to succeed they need to start learning and applying these technologies now. My students think that kind of technology is just "in the movies", I want to teach them that it exists here and not just in "a galaxy far far away"
We need several sphero robots including R2D2, BB-8, and a sphero ball in order to get my students excited about coding, so they can learn and apply coding technologies in real life.
These are the droids we are looking for because my students can learn to code using the sphero app and program the droids to move and respond to certain commands. They would be over the moons of Endor for these droids as they have seen them only in the movies, with your support they will be able to use them in real life. We also need a force band, which allows them to code and then with wireless technology "use the force" to move the droids and robots. My students also need a variety of cases to store these materials safely and securely when we are not using them. With your support my students will be able to experience, and learn about coding in an exciting way that appeals to their interests. Help our classroom Donors Choose, you're our only hope!
