Students entering the Young 5's program should be 5 by September 30th. Most students entering the Young 5's program are between 4 years, 11 months and 5 years, 5 months upon the start of the school year. I have 2 groups of students with 10 students in each group. My students attend school all day, every other day on an all year alternating calendar schedule.
The students in the Young 5's program are chronologically ready to enter the school setting, but may not be developmentally ready to endure the rigors of the Kindergarten curriculum.
The Young 5's program allows these students a year to develop the foundational skills needed in Language Arts to enter Kindergarten the following school year.
My Project
Young children learn best through play. Providing options for students to engage in play, exploration is essential to their development. I have always wanted to add additional experiences to the dramatic play center by providing my students with dress up costumes. These costumes would provide additional opportunities for cognitive, language, and general knowledge growth.
With the addition of play costumes to the dramatic play center, students can interact through role play while building social skills and language development.
Costumes of a chef and waitress can provide students with opportunities to read menus and orders, take turns talking to one another, and draw on previous knowledge while learning new concepts. Costumes of a police office and firefighter can provide opportunities to help community members and promote kindness. Costumes of a doctor, nurse, and veterinarian provide opportunities to care for others and promote communication to tell others how one is feeling.
Students in the Young 5's program need lots of opportunities to develop skills through play. The dramatic play center does provide opportunities to develop social/emotional skills, language skills, and cognitive skills. With the addition of the costume set, it will provide additional opportunities to learn and grow. The storage shelves will provide an area to house the costumes as they wait for the students to play with them daily.
