My Students

These days, novels just aren't enough to keep students well-engaged. Assign them a book, and they'll read the SparkNotes. Maus is a GRAPHIC novel and enables me to introduce not only art to my English classroom, but also introduce literature of the Holocaust in a much more engaging way.

My students come from various backgrounds but are mostly lower-middle to poor income families.

Many of them babysit younger siblings while one or two parents work extremely long days simply to cover the rent. Books are often their only escape. My school is an up-and-coming high school in the midst of serious renovation.

My Project

The great thing about Maus is because it is a Graphic Novel, it allows for the teacher to introduce art and the humanities to a regular English class. We can talk art, music, poetry, photography, rhetoric (visual AND textual), even psychology in a class that is otherwise full of 'books and writing and junk." To start, I plan to expose students to various types of graphic novels and even children's literature in order for them to obtain an understanding of the role visual rhetoric plays in everyday life. I will even include the history of graphics in novels, the how and why, and challenge my students to find the purpose for such a medium. This idea and knowledge of visual rhetoric will then be used in a later poetry unit.

By using Maus to teach Holocaust Literature, students will get a better understanding of war, the human cost of it, and how relationships are tested as a result.

As part of the World Literature curriculum in NC, students will also be exposed to a different style of novel, one, I hope, that will not easily be forgotten.
