Maus and Doing Right in the Face of Injustice

Help me give my students a window into the realities of the Holocaust--and what it meant for ordinary people to navigate and attempt to survive it--using the graphic novel Maus.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, my Humanities students are attempting to answer the essential question "How do you do right in the face of injustice?" As we move into our unit on genocides, students will consider how different actors--from ordinary citizens, to persecuted individuals, to government officials--respond to wide-scale injustice, whose responsibility it is to take action, and what it means to act ethically during a crisis.

Art Spiegelman's Maus I and Maus II are the perfect texts to help students explore these questions.

These graphic novels allow students to dig into what protects some from injustice--and when those protections fall apart. They also explore what motivates some people to stand up for and shield vulnerable neighbors while other people seem to act against their own self interests and harm others, too. Maus is both a rich, nuanced literary text and a profound and heartbreaking look into the atrocities of the Holocaust and its lasting scars.

I know that Maus will be an impactful text that will stick with my students long after this unit ends. I appreciate your support in helping my students access this important work of literature and historical record.
