He's not always keen on the idea of coming to do work in speech. So, I changed my approach. I invite him to come have a snack in my room and just chat. Those chats have built our relationship to what it is and have contained quite a bit of advice and support that he needs. He got speech while he thought he was just having a snack. Sneaky? A little. But we've had some great speech sessions as a result. So, thank you! I also want to mention the significance of THE YELLOW CHAIR. Maybe you remember the prestige of getting to sit in a rolling, swivel chair in high school. Students get to use it at the big computer when we do serious work. They love it. I made a deck for our Idiom of the Week, which is a favorite in speech-language therapy. We learn that \"break a leg\" isn't a threat – it means \"Good luck!\" Students love unpacking figurative language and the funny meanings when we are too literal. I use it several times throughout class to model close reading, display student work, annotate texts, and walk students through note-taking and brainstorming in real time. For my students—many of whom thrive with visual and hands-on learning—being able to see thinking modeled clearly and collectively has increased engagement and understanding.\r\n\r\nOur new geographically correct world map is permanently displayed and referenced daily. It has become an anchor for our Social Studies curriculum, helping students build spatial awareness as we track historical migration, analyze geographic influences on events, and locate places mentioned in our units of study. Having an accurate, accessible map has strengthened students' ability to make global connections and deepen their comprehension.\r\n\r\nEven the electric pencil sharpener has had a powerful impact. By keeping it in the classroom, students no longer need to leave the room to sharpen pencils, which has significantly reduced missed class time and interruptions.
