When did you learn to tell time? Well in my class we learn to tell time to the hour and half hour in first grade! I teach at a high poverty high military population public school.
There's a problem with my first graders learning to tell time. We only have one giant size teacher clock for all 20 of us to share! The students need to learn that the hour hand is halfway between the numbers and not pointing at the hour when it is half past the hour. We have yet another math problem--we don't have attribute links to learn about patterns, shapes, and pattern units. I love teaching math and the students seem to love learning math with all the hands on math tools. We are just missing some important necessities to enhance our understanding!
Providing a gear clock to all students will ensure proper learning of how to tell time as well as enable all students to have access to the learning, not just those that sit in the front row! Finally they will be able to manipulate their own clock to demonstrate proper time telling.
I have also requested attribute links that help students learn about patterns, sizes, pattern units, and shapes. We do not have these tools in our classroom and not being able to manipulate these items makes for some challenging teaching and learning of these concepts! Students experience great joy when learning with these tools.
In first grade we also learn the basics of place value using Base 10 blocks. By allowing the students or myself to use Base 10 stamps we can quickly assess what we know on how to count 10s and 1s. The students will enjoy creating their own math problem to solve, they get to be their own teacher!
With your contribution you can make sure that students from a high poverty, military background don't miss out on wonderful learning opportunities that students truly enjoy!
