Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten is the welcome mat to a child's school experience. For the majority of our students, it is their first time in a structured learning environment. They come in excited to learn, without the preconceived notions about school. Together we build a culture of collaboration, engaging each student as both learner and teacher.
Our students learn to work together, explaining their thinking and taking ownership of their learning.
We give them the tools and language to share and further their learning independent of adult intervention. The more agency our students have, the more invested they are in their own academic growth and success.
We want them to understand that it is not about having the "right" answer, or being first. Learning is about sharing, whether it is your thinking behind solving a math problem, or the social navigation of how to work well with our classmates. That is what we are working on in kindergarten. It is a process, because we are learners for life.
My Project
The Kindergarten level math books from Japan Math work together to build a comprehensive and effective mathematics curriculum for young learners.
The focus is not on bells and whistles, but, instead, on the math.
Each student is provided their own copy of a lesson book that reflects, in a streamlined format, the mathematical concepts covered for that day. This is helpful for student reflection, formative assessment and communication to the families.
Not only are all of the lessons and books simple and directly related to the mathematical teaching point, but the manipulatives, also demonstrate this method. The focus is not on the manipulative, but the support it provides students.
The teacher is able to provide support to the students using these resources which reflect their curricular lesson plan. And each part of the program is thoughtful and purposeful.
