Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from homes with difficult financial and/or emotional situations and very few extras. Students take on responsibilities at home that they should not have to think about at their ages. All students at this Title I school receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite the challenges in their young lives, they are eager to learn and excited to come to school.

School is an escape for my students, a place where they can dream about their futures.

I want all of my students to know that they can achieve the futures they dream of with hard work, dedication, and focus.

My Project

Hands-on math materials are vital to my students' understanding of numbers, place-value, and regrouping. When students can manipulate base ten blocks to represent number values, they can begin to truly understand the concepts behind abstract math problems. Currently, I do not have a full class set of base ten blocks for every student (or even small groups) to use on a regular basis.

In our classroom, students work together, in small groups, to work out math problems.

A full class set of base ten blocks will help all students to model math concepts that are difficult for them to grasp, such as regrouping.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. These materials will help my below grade-level third graders get caught up on the math concepts that cause them to struggle.
