This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is classified as a Title I school where more than three-quarters of my students come from low-income households with sparse resources. My students receive free and reduced-price lunches.

Despite socioeconomic disadvantages, my students deserve a classroom that evens the educational playing field!

My students don't have as many resources at home that other children get. My mission is to create a classroom that blooms with opportunity, possibility and endless learning. Thanks to Donors Choose for turning dreams into reality, and for giving my loving students a better educational experience.

My Project

Our school uses a highly researched based approach to teach math, called Cognitively Guided Instruction. With this individualized approach to math, the student brings their thinking and background experiences into math instruction. Simply put, we don't do worksheets! We use hands on activities such as word problems, counting collections, and card games to build number sense. I am in need of sets of large playing cards to teach and play math games.

These decks of cards will help my kids build number sense through hands on play.

With these cards we can play different games that teach many of the kindergarten math standards, such as Making 10, and determining number quantities by playing "Compare". By playing these games with the cards students will build fact fluency. The large cards will build interest by introducing a novelty item to class- this always works well in kindergarten! The size of these cards will also help my little ones be able to count the number of hearts (or any suit) on each card. This way, all of my students will be able to see the game and will build independence so they can play on their own.

Learning through play is so powerful for my little ones. With these cards funded, I will be able to make math a game!
