My Students

My favorite quote is, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." Inspiration comes in the form of student exploration.

My Special Education math students need more tools to explore math concepts that are difficult to learn from a book.

I have a variety of students in my middle school class. Some are low functioning and need to learn the basics. Some have learning disabilities and need to use their eyes and hands to learn. Some are emotionally disturbed and need to be challenged and engaged in order to be interested in school.

My Project

The math activities and tools I am requesting are all easy and ready for students to use. They allow students to explore and practice skills of geometry, patterns, fractions, number sense, and time. After I demonstrate use of the tools, I will make them available on a math center table. At the end of our daily 90 minute math block, students will be able to choose an activity to explore independently or with partners. By keeping the math center new and exciting, students learn to love math.

When students discover that math is fun, their self confidence and entire attitude about school improves.

If you help provide the tools, my classroom will be the place that hard-to-reach students fall in love with math. After spending three years in my math class, they can move onto high school excited about more challenging math.
