My Students
"Some advice: keep the flame of curiosity and wonderment alive, even when studying for boring exams." Michio Kaku couldn't have said it better. This project will allow my students to explore the realities/applications of mathematics and computer science, and make their educations relevant.
I teach 9th grade Algebra I and 10th grade Algebra II, and my programming class contains a mix of students ranging from 9th to 12th grade.
My students are fascinated by careers in computer science and engineering, and are driven to create above and beyond what's expected of them in the classroom. My Algebra students are at varying levels and my programming students are beginning to learn more advanced applications of computer science.
My Project
My students need three iPads, headphones, and protective cases. As a continuation of my first project, these iPads and headphones will allow me to create centers that not only allow for independent work stations (i.e., video tutorials and exercises) for remediation/intervention in my math classes, but also allow my programming students to develop applications for iOS.
While my programming students have learned the skills necessary for basic web and app development, they have not had access to the technology necessary for practicing these skills. We are requesting iPads in order to test the applications my students will be developing. By having access to appropriate technology, our students will be able to recognize the real-world applicability and value of the skills they have learned this year.
Attending a neighborhood school on the west side of Detroit, my students do not have access to the basic technology and resources afforded to most math/programming classes.
Please help me bring the world of computer science into the classroom by helping my students access the technology they need to become successful app developers.
