Math You Can Touch: Manipulatives for Young Learners

Help me give my students a variety of hands-on math manipulatives designed specifically for first-grade learners to use during math centers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, math is more than numbers on a page — it is the foundation for a child’s confidence as a learner. My students are curious, energetic six- and seven-year-olds who learn best when they can move, build, touch, and explore. When math becomes hands-on, their eyes light up with understanding. Concepts that once felt confusing suddenly make sense when they can physically see and feel how numbers work together.

Right now, many of my students are learning how to add, subtract, build numbers, and understand place value.

These are big ideas for little learners. Math manipulatives like counting cubes, base ten blocks, ten frames, and pattern blocks give students a concrete way to model their thinking. Instead of guessing or memorizing, they can build a number, break it apart, and truly understand what it means. These tools will transform our math centers into spaces where students collaborate, problem-solve, and take ownership of their learning.

My classroom is filled with diverse learners, including students who need extra support and those who thrive with visual and hands-on experiences. These materials will allow me to differentiate instruction so every child feels successful. When students can touch and move math, they build not only skills but also confidence. Your support will help create a classroom where math feels accessible, exciting, and empowering — where every child believes, “I can do this.”
