This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Having fun is mandatory when my students walk through my door! Many students struggle with solving math word problems. Using games to make problem solving a breeze will enable my students to view challenging problems in a totally different way. NEVER GIVE UP is what I strive to teach my students.

I work with groups of 6-8 students who are struggling learners in the area of math.

Over a two day period, I see approximately eighty fourth and fifth grade students. For many of my students, math is their least favorite subject, mainly because it is difficult and has never come easy for them. Our school is a building that houses two grades - fourth and fifth. Our students filter in from three different elementary buildings.

My Project

Making math fun is a top priority for me when I plan activities for my struggling learners. I have never met a student who doesn't enjoy playing a game...have you? Many times, just looking at word problems is a chore for my students. Having The Archaeology Adventure: Operations Word Problem Game, The Travel America: Measurement & Geometry Word Problem Game, and The Math Star Word Problem Game will allow them stress free opportunities to solve challenging word problems across the common core curriculum. I am also looking to obtain Common Core Problem Solving Journals to give my students the opportunity to show their work and explain their mathematical thinking. Taking a tough area and creating a fun environment will give my students rich mathematical experiences where they will build self-confidence and learn that math problem solving is an area they can easily find success with.

Donations for this project will give my students the opportunity to change their entire outlook on solving word problems.

This project will add a solid piece to my classroom where students will be able to have fun, while tackling a challenging area. Imagine yourself a 9-10 year old student who dreads solving math word problems. You are now given an opportunity to play a game that will enable you to see that problem solving can actually be FUN!
