This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As we transition back to a traditional school setting, it will be essential to build relationships and help students feel a connection with peers and teachers. We work every day on our social-emotional skills - mindfulness, recognizing our feelings, conflict resolution, and building relationships. The children thrive in their academics when they feel loved, safe, and needed in our learning space. We love reading stories, dancing, and singing silly songs together. Outside of class, the children enjoy video games, reading, dinosaurs, museums, science experiments, going to the park, soccer, gymnastics, baking cupcakes, helping others, playing dress-up, painting, and drawing.

Our favorite time of the school day is when we stretch our brains with math!

We work together to count collections, play math games, measure objects, build with geometric shapes, and practice graphing. We love finding math in the world around us! Each student uses differentiated tools so they can work at their level and increase their understanding of math.

The students in our class come from diverse backgrounds. There are many cultures present in our classroom community including Hmong, Mexican, African-American, Cambodian, and Caucasian. It is our differences that make us unique and beautiful!

My Project

In first grade, math is hands-on, concrete, and perceptual. Students need to touch and manipulate objects as they learn to count and practice math fluency. The more we can "gamify" learning or play with numbers, the more it sticks with kids.

The items in this project will provide tools for students to work independently during math time.

The playdough will be rolled into numbers and shapes to count. The dice will give students a dot pattern to use as a tool when putting numbers together or taking them apart (addition and subtraction).

The laminator will be used often to create new card games and learning activities for independent centers.

All of these pieces will work together to support student independence while I am working with a small group at my teacher table. When students see the night light is lit, they will know that teacher is unavailable to answer questions, and they should ask a friend for help instead.
