"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics." ~ Paul Halmos. As a teacher, I have always dreamed of my math class consisting of technology, small group instruction, and meaningful learning stations. Slowly, but surely, I am trying to accomplish just that.
My students are very energetic learners.
The school they attend is located in an impoverished inner-city zone. Their learning experiences are limited somewhat, so I feel responsible to expose them to as much as I can in a year of learning. Many of my students are living with a grandparent. I have always felt supported by my parents and feel like they want the best for their children. We have an extended school year to combat the loss of learning that occurs over a long summer break. Scheduled intersessions are built into the school year to help remediate our students' gaps. Our school culture is very positive, with high expectations for all learners. We work very hard to support our students. We do not have an established PTA, so there are no funds to support our classroom ventures. School funds tend to cover the basics.
I am requesting Math Activity Stations, Math Instant Learning Centers, Instant Math Games Library, Math Folder Game Libraries, Hot Dots Math Quiz Cards and pens, Math Equivalency Puzzles, a Build & Learn Geometry Kit, and Foam Number Dice. The purpose of my request is to provide my students the opportunity to work with math stations while I am conducting small group instruction. I want the activities to be meaningful and engaging. I want to use these stations to remediate, practice, and enrich student learning. I want students to see how math is necessary in real-life problem solving. The resources from Lakeshore will help me provide student-centered learning activities. The manipulatives will also help build students' conceptual understanding of math. In a typical math classroom, students are receiving instruction, complete several problems with the guidance of the teacher, and then complete problems independently. This proposal combines multiple strategies of whole group and flexible small group instruction with manipulatives and well-planned math stations. Students will be working cooperatively and talking about math. Students will be engaged in educational experiences that are relevant to them.
Having well-planned stations designed to address specific math skills will enhance the math instruction of my students.
Students will see real-life connections when exploring the station activities and realize skills are needed to problem-solve, not just to get the correct answers on a set of math problems. One of our weaknesses as a school and as a division is our math performance. Students need to become more engaged in math and my instruction needs to become more effective for my students.
