Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My K-1 Autism classroom was opened last year at the last minute. Items were ordered, but most were never received due to the budget. I have had to borrow from others throughout the year and buying what I could myself. These students have so much potential they need the proper tools to succeed.
I have 9 students with autism and other behavior-based disabilities.
They all are so very smart and eager to learn. They all have very unique talents. Most of my students come from situations that will not afford them many opportunities. I feel it is my responsibility to do all I can to provide them with a solid educational foundation in kindergarten, so they may have the tools to succeed as they transverse the education process especially with the burden of their disability.
My Project
Students with autism need to have a multi-sensory experience in order to totally grasp a concept, merely explaining just doesn't work. They need visual aids and hands-on activities to fully master a concept. I am requesting teaching tools, which will help them understand and reinforcement the concept I am teaching. It is extremely difficult to explain to visually and tactical students about magnets unless you can demonstrate with them and then give them the opportunity to manipulate the magnets themselves. The same can be said for place value, fractions, patterns, and graphs, which are some of the other teaching tools I have requested.
I feel passionate about this project because I know how I struggled to teach without these resources last year.
Many times I was so frustrated I would purchase items myself to supplement and provide tangible examples for them. It is beyond my financial means to provide everything they need, so I am asking respectly for some help in providing these much needed resources for my students.
