Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school mission is to build a respectful, successful learning community through art-centered and technology-enhanced practices that develop intelligent behaviors in all students.
Our elementary school is a creative arts magnet school in an urban district that uses interdisciplinary teaching and daily arts instruction to positively affect all students in the school through hands-on, interactive learning experiences.
In our overall school population, eighty-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our fifth-grade classrooms have students from diverse backgrounds and experiences who are bused to our school from all over the city. The students are highly motivated to learn, but they have a wide range of learning needs. In our three 5th grade classes, we have 80-90 students of which forty-one percent are English language learners from El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia, Somalia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Additionally, six percent of the students have IEP’s (individualized educational plans) because of identified learning difficulties. Our school has many diverse learners.
My Project
Our district has made a commitment to using iPad technology to provide student-centered learning opportunities as well as increasing student engagement. All 5th-grade students will be using iPads to gather, process and communicate information. In order to maximize this technology-enriched learning, my students need additional resources to use with their iPads. Specifically, our 5th-grade students would benefit greatly from a grade level license to use the IXL Math website for online content area practice. IXL Math is an immersive learning experience that provides individualized, comprehensive, standards-aligned math skill practice.
The core philosophy of IXL Math is “given the proper environment, every child is capable of learning.” Students will experience individualized math learning in an environment that motivates and challenges them while tracking their skill progress.
Using the subscription for the last two years has shown that IXL Math can improve students’ ability level as well as their motivation and effort in math. By donating to our classroom you will make a huge difference in these students' lives.
