Our elementary school is a creative arts magnet school in an urban district that uses interdisciplinary teaching and daily arts instruction to positively affect all students in the school through hands-on, interactive learning experiences. In our overall school population, 81% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our 5th grade classroom has students from diverse backgrounds and experiences who are bused to our school from all over the city. The students are highly motivated to learn but they have a wide range of learning needs. In our classroom, we have 30 students of which 41 % are English language learners from El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia, Somalia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Additionally, 6% of the students have IEP’s (individualized educational plans) because of identified learning difficulties. Increasing our ability to use technology for learning opportunities will allow students to work at their own pace on meaningful activities, no matter what their needs may be.
