Math Monkey Experience

Help me give my students the opportunity to experience math through favorite math books, counters, sequencing trains, dot journals and playing with their counting monkeys.

My Students

My students are ages 5 and 6 and are in a specialized program called a Diagnostic Kindergarten for students with disabilities and most have had 2 years of special education pre-school invention and still are not ready to attend their neighborhood school.

These children have Autism, Developmental Delays, may use Communication Devices and some have Social Emotional Concerns and Multiple Disabilities.

We run small group instruction transitioning from table to table to work on basic pre-reading, writing and math skills and do whole group interventions to support social emotional and behavioral development. Now that school has begun many are far below their age-appropriate peers in all areas of academic functioning and need much younger materials than we have to address the missing pieces of their learning especially in the area of math.

Our goal is to get them ready to return to their neighborhood school and back into the general education setting for first grade.

My Project

Many of the students are placed within my classroom because they lack the necessary basic skills to be at their neighborhood setting. By providing them with new and exciting math tools we are hopeful that we can find ways to impact their understanding and meet their individual goals. What we have learned is that having hands on experiences with our learning increases motivation, attention to task, and increases student knowledge to help fill those holes we have had seen in their past. Today is the day to open new doors of learning and create sustainability for these special challenged children.
