My Students

My students use more advanced technologies outside of my classroom on a daily basis. Please help me to close the gap. We have the blueprints for innovative learning, we just need the tools! My students thrive when learning is kinesthetic and interactive; iPads would perfectly meet their needs!

The students here enjoy soaking up the sun and hanging out at the nearby beach shores of our small town. Although we have a rather small student population, our school plays a very large part in our community. Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry. Students at our school are very easygoing and also easy to please. Teaching my students is very rewarding because they are appreciative for even the littlest of things such as: finding an extra binder for a student to have or opening your classroom at recess for a place to work. They are the group of kids that make you want to go above and beyond for.

My Project

My students are all eager learn, but in order to achieve success they must each overcome the unique challenges presented before them. I teach special education math for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders here at Waimanalo. On a daily basis we come together to tackle some of the most challenging math concepts there are. Many of the students in my classes learn best through interactive technologies and have grown up in a generation where these resources are readily available. My goal is to use these two iPads to integrate the technology they are familiar with into the way they learn math. Our school uses the Go Math curriculum which has an interactive student edition that would work seamlessly with iPads. Paired with IXL Math and other math software, learning concepts about fractions, money, geometry, algebra, etc. will instantly come alive. I truly believe that the most effective way to prepare my students for their future, is to be innovative and teach them using tools of their generation.

In my classroom, the levels of each student varies tremendously.

I spend a lot of time giving individualized instruction and practice activities to each student. When students are not practicing individually, I put a lot of emphasis on teamwork and group assignments. Funding this project for iPads will elevate the level of differentiation I am able to provide for my students while providing them with the skills to use technologies that can assist their current and future learning abilities.
