My Students

Hello! I am a 3rd-grade teacher at a school in Bridgeport. I have the privilege of teaching math to two 3rd grade classes this year. My students come from low-income families with diverse backgrounds. I would love to see my students have the same opportunities as those in higher income schools. Due to lack of district funds, we do not have the funding available to have appropriate math materials to help students learn the concepts needed for third grade. My students are a great group of kids that are always striving to learn new things. They would really appreciate any help to increase math materials in the class to help build their learning this year.

My Project

Students will understand 3rd-grade math concepts if they are able to use hands-on math manipulatives as well as complete math problems daily in their math journals. Daily, students work in math journals to complete math activities independently and in small groups. This helps them prepare for their learning that day. Students are able to practice their social skills by discussing how they completed the math problem in their journals. Each student needs their own composition notebook to complete this activity daily. Students also need to be able to have a variety of math manipulatives to use during whole group and small group working times. Many of my students need hands-on materials to help them understand the concepts being taught. For example, the fraction sets will help students understand the different fractions and be able to determine which fraction is larger or smaller. I intend to use all of these materials on a daily basis in both of my math classes. These materials will make math fun and be exciting for my students!
