Do you remember when you were learning new math concepts in school? When I was in school we did worksheets or worked out of a textbook. Those types of things do not work today. The students are hands on learners and need objects to manipulate to better understand the concepts that are being taught.
My students attend a low income school in upstate New York.
The boys and girls attend a full day Pre-K program. This is my 7th year at the school but only my 2nd year as a teacher. Our classroom is full of many great things that were handed down from other teachers. Many of the manipulatives that we use are either out of date, missing pieces, or do not match up with our curriculum. The New York State math curriculum is changing and we need to update our manipulatives to go along with those changes. The students are a great group of students. They are very hands on and love to play. By providing the students with new math manipulatives they will be playing and not realizing they are learning new math concepts in the process. The students in my class get really excited over new things. They would love to have new manipulatives to learn new math concepts with. They really are a great group of students.
My Project
These items that I have requested will help to reinforce the concepts that are being taught. The match and learn counting board and the count and link center will allow the students to work independently to reinforce their counting skills. The button sorting center will help the students to be able to sort objects by color, size, and shape. The visuals that these manipulatives provide will help many of my students that are visual learners. The pattern blocks and pattern block activity cards will help the students to match shapes in order to create a picture. This will also help the students when they are drawing. The beanbag sets will provide a fun way for the students to learn about numbers, colors, and shapes. The students will be actively engaged with these items which will help them to stay interested in what is being taught. What student doesn't like throwing things in the classroom without getting in trouble?
Donations for this project will have a big impact on my students.
Most of the items in my classroom are out of date or missing pieces. Being able to provide my students with new materials to reinforce what is being taught would make me so happy. I want to give my students a solid foundation to set them up for success in school. These students deserve new materials to work with. I want to be able to give them the best first experience in school possible.
