Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious and love nature. Any chance they get to be outdoors they love. They would pick limes, avocados, and apples for me from our school trees. My students are dancers and singers they enjoy listening to banda, cumbia, hip-hop and pop. Many of them performed during our Latino and African American Cultural Celebrations.
My students are mathematicians who persevere in solving problems, scientists who enjoy investigating questions of the natural world, engineers who like to see how things work and they are children who love to play.
Lastly, my students are loving and will be the first to pull a sad classmate aside to see what is wrong. They have grown up together, attending the same local elementary and their bond continues into 6th grade.
My Project
My vision for my project is to supplement my math curriculum with 100 Math Minutes, 100 sets of 10 questions that are targeted at improving math fluency of basic math skills. Each table group will have a timer to set the minute for their table group to complete the 10 math problems. All scholars will have access to a number line and calculator to support them during the minute.
Math Minutes will be integrated within the first 10 minutes of each math class to create a sense of fun in learning and improving as mathematicians.
I have seen my scholars build their confidence when they have been successful during a math Kahoot game or when I am assertively monitoring their group math work and letting them know they showed their steps correctly or got the answer correct. They thrive off of immediate feedback when it comes to their math learning.
Why grades 5-7 Math Minutes in a 6th grade math class? I want to meet my scholars where they are and get them to grade level. Unfortunately, not all scholars are at grade level. With these math materials, I believe my scholars will improve their math fluency and be ready to leave 6th grade with a growth mindset when it comes to math learning.
