In my previous year of teaching, as a resident teacher, my mentor teacher used breaks as an incentive that scholars earned mid-way through 2 hours of instruction to allow scholars time to play fun, strategy games like Connect 4 and Uno to take a break from working their brain in class. According to research, breaks from learning decrease stress and increase productivity in scholars. Think about how you take breaks from the work you do or even the breaks you take while working out. Unfortunately, the only breaks I have given scholars is allowing them to stretch outside. My scholars are showing grit and perseverance in our math and science class. They deserve a break where they can play fun, strategy games with their friends.
