This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Differentiation is proven to be the BEST way to meet individual students' needs and help them rapidly achieve their learning goals! I teach 1st grade in a high-poverty school in Connecticut.
It usually surprises people to hear that I teach in a high-need school in such a wealthy state, but Connecticut has the highest achievement gap in the country! As such, many of my students enter 1st grade struggling with basic math concepts (number-identification, counting objects, ordinal numbers, and putting basic amounts in order from least to greatest). In order to re-teach and reinforce these basic skills without sacrificing too much time (we still need to master all the 1st grade skills!), I need to create math centers!
One of the most effective ways to close the achievement gap in my classroom is by differentiating my instruction to meet my students' needs. Centers is an excellent, and FUN, way to meet this goal. Math centers help my students to grasp new math skills while practicing and reinforcing old objectives they've already mastered. In addition, the interactive and activity-based structure of centers invests students in their own learning!
Your help will make it possible for my students to master new math skills that are vital to their progress throughout the rest of their education. By making a contribution to this project, you are helping my students not only learn math, but LOVE math.
