My Students
I teach in what is considered one of the most dangerous cities in America; Camden, New Jersey. Contrary to popular belief, the students I work with every day are genuinely good kids that are eager to learn and do their best each day. For some of my students, it is an uphill battle to get to school each day and requires a great deal of self motivation as education and the importance of education is not stressed at home. But each day, I have twenty 3rd graders that come ready to give me their best.
The drive my students have to succeed makes up for what the lack in support that they receive at home.
For the past four years, I have taught in an inclusion classroom and have worked with students of varying academic levels. Regardless of my students' abilities, my kids come ready to give their all and succeed. Success looks very different for each of my students, but success is success none the less. I have high expectations for my students and expect nothing but 100% effort every day. And they rise to the occasion, despite what people expect them to do.
My Project
Being in an inclusive classroom, the math games will allow me to reach as many students a possible in my classroom. Through games, I can engage more students and get them excited and actively involved in the learning in the classroom. Additionally, presenting grade level concepts in a fun way will give students more at bats with skills and allow them time to master the skills in a variety of ways.
Working with students in small groups is beneficial for all students because they get more of the one to one attention they need to close achievement gaps.
Rather than giving students that are working independently during small group time worksheets, the games and manipulatives will surprise up the learning experience and make independent work time something to look forward to, not something to dread.
