Math Manipulatives

Help me give my students 25 sets of base ten blocks and 30 sets of fraction circles to allow students to model abstract concepts through concrete representations.

My Students

I teach third grade in what most would consider a small rural town. My students love learning and are eager to perform to the best of their abilities.

I have a variety of ability levels and learning styles in my classroom.

I have a complex dynamic that includes students as English language learners, students with disabilities or behavioral concerns, that require small and large accommodations, average and gifted students. Each of these students wants to be successful each and every day.

My Project

These base ten math manipulatives will be used to complement our current math curriculum and allow students to model their mathematical thinking through concrete examples. The use of base 10 blocks will support students as they move to pictorial representations and then to abstract representations. The fraction circle manipulatives will be used in much the same manner. These manipulatives allow students to visualize fractional parts and how they create a whole. Students will use fraction circles to identify unit fractions, parts of the whole, compare fractions, and identify equivalent fractions.

By allowing students to show their thinking using manipulatives students will strengthen their ability to make sense of problems, use appropriate tools, and reason abstractly which will lead to a firm foundation on which to build their mathematical education.

Covid has had a noticeable impact on students' mathematical abilities in my classroom. This year I have noticed that students are having more difficulty telling me the why behind mathematical operations and their reasoning when making sense of problems. It is my hope that these manipulatives will help fill some of the gaps that Covid has created.
