My students need math manipulatives such as spring scales, stopwatches, pattern blocks, and place value cards to help them have a strong conceptual understanding of the third grade math material.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Shakuntala Devi said, "Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers." My students are extremely capable mathematicians. I know they will be able to do whatever they set their minds to.
I teach an amazing class of 26 second grade students.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. A significant portion of them receives Special Education services. All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners. They are very supportive of one another and crave opportunities to work and learn together.
My Project
Research tells us that in order for students to understand abstract concepts, they need to first learn the concept in a concrete way and then move to the abstract. In order to do this in mathematics with elementary-age students, students need access to a variety of manipulatives.
My students need manipulatives including counters, place value discs, metric weights, and digital scales.
They need these manipulatives in order to learn math concepts essential to the third grade curriculum, such as place value, capacity, properties of multiplication and division, and area. Students will use these manipulatives when working in partnerships and small groups throughout the school year.
These materials will help to make my students' mathematical understanding as strong as possible.
