Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone learns in different ways. Imagine attempting to learn fundamental math skills that set the pace for the rest of your educational career without the tools you need.
My students go to school in a low income area.
They don't necessarily have access to the things they need at home, and they definitely don't have access to all the educational tools they would benefit from at school. Giving them access to these things could push my students further in math than they could go with simply a pencil and a piece of paper.
My students may only be nine years old, but they have a serious drive to succeed in life. These are children who have specific universities picked out, dream about their future careers, and care about their education more than your average fourth grader does.
My Project
Math is becoming increasingly important in today's world. The more tools my students have to help them acquire the skills they need for later in life, the better. The whiteboards and markers allow students to be engaged and actually interact during math lessons. With these the have the opportunity to practice new skills the moment they learn them. The beauty of this resource is that students can begin using it the moment it arrives, and continue to use them throughout the day for activities other then math.
Other manipulatives allow students to practice math skills independently or with peers in an interactive, fun way. Because our school has full-inclusion classrooms, students with special needs are learning at the same pace as students who have no problem learning in a traditional classroom environment. These students deserve the same chance to learn as any other child. Giving students the OPTION to learn in different ways may mean giving students the OPPORTUNITY to learn.
Not all children are born with the same opportunities in life, but all children deserve an equal chance to succeed.
By supplying much needed resources to students who attend school in a low income area, you are helping to correct the inequalities that may otherwise affect the futures of these wonderfully driven, hard-working students.
