In fourth and fifth grade my students are given a lot of responsibility to be strong, independent workers. For some this is a challenge they meet easily, and for others it is a large task that they battle to be successful at every day.
My students are energetic, enthusiastic learners who thrive with hands on activities and learning through doing.
Many students come from low income neighborhoods and deal with daily struggles far beyond their years. However what they bring to school each day is a passion to experience the opportunities around them and discover who they are by learning and doing. My crew has made tremendous gains from the beginning of the year and are pushing more each day to become successful, independent workers. As a class they have come together and show great compassion for their classmates and their peers school wide.
My Project
Each day after lunch my students return ready for math. We usually start with a large group lesson and then students are given the time to work with that day's math focus, and other math content, though small group centers. With these game and task cards my students will be able to review knowledge learned during operation units, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fraction and decimal units, and measurement and geometry units, all of which are core content areas in 4th and 5th grade. They will be able to work independently and in small groups to solidify knowledge learned in large group by using the activity cards. The bingo games will allow them to display knowledge learned in a unit in a fun and engaging way.
My students come each day with a desire to learn.
During independent work time this desire competes with the social desire to visit with friends. With the help of these materials students can get the best of both worlds, working with partners or in small groups to learn important math content, and have fun while doing it.
