Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a twelve year 6th grade mathematics teacher at a Chicago public school. My school is located in a very low income community. Most of the students come from immigrant families, and also refugees. Many of the students lack classroom supplies. During this time of e learning, it is extremely important for students to have the supplies they need to be successful at home.
The school that I work at is, "one of a kind." We are fortunate to have students who speak over 50 different languages.
This creates a unique diversity that is beneficial to all students in attendance. Specifically within my classroom, there are students of various ethnic backgrounds, cultures and religions. This creates an ideal environment for collaboration and authentic learning experiences. My students also have various learning styles and attributes that make each one of them unique!
"Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it everyday." -Author Unknown
With the diversity, there is also a large need for differentiation. Students could benefit from having content specific books and readalouds, math manipulatives, dry erase materials, and easel for math enrichment/intervention.
Please help support my wonderful students!
My Project
The use of content specific literature is crucial within a middle school math classroom. Students within my classroom have various learning styles, that would benefit from having math read alouds. It allows students to physically manipulate tools that aid in their mathematical understanding. Students will strongly benefit from this when it is a challenging concept.
Manipulatives are a major part of students' success in math.
Because of the current Covid19 crisis, I want to ensure that all of my students are academically challenged, supported, and prepared. Differentiation will still be the focus within my classroom, despite obstacles that are present!
