Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For many students, math can feel like an overwhelming foreign language, with students falling further behind each year. However, regular, individualized practice on basic skills can help students develop the fluency that they need to be success in higher level mathematics.
My scholars are fearless, funny, and intelligent thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds.
They never shy away from telling you how they feel or asking for help if they need it, and they are beginning to develop autonomy and crave independence as all teenagers do. This is the second year in a row that I have taught this group--95% of whom qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch and 99% of whom are Hispanic or African-American--and it has been a joy to see them mature and grow into young men and women. As scholars at a charter school in a low-income community in Texas, many of my scholars will--will, not would--be the first in their family to graduate from college, and the push this year in eighth grade is to prepare them for success in college preparatory high schools and beyond. They are the most hard-working group of scholars I have ever met, and I consider myself lucky to get to work with them every day.
My Project
Unfortunately, many of my scholars failed to develop mathematical fluency prior to attending my school. For many of my scholars, there is a very real mathematical "language barrier" that is preventing them from achieving any sort of success in math. I am asking two Chromebook laptops to give my scholars the opportunity to access web-based, remedial mathematics like Think Through Math and Khan Academy for 30 minutes every day. These programs are able to assess where my scholars are and work from there on an individualized plan to get them where they need to be, whether they're starting on a 3rd grade level or an 8th grade level. Overall, this will help them develop fluency in everything from basic math facts to operations with integers and rational numbers. Any type of success in math starts with this basic fluency, and my scholars desperately need the opportunity to have as many "at bats" as they need to master this material.
We say a lot that education is the great equalizer, but more specifically, data has shown that the greatest predictor of college success is a child's performance in Algebra I.
My scholars have to develop the necessary math fluency before getting to high school so that they can succeed in Algebra I when they get there, and these tools will allow for the individualization that each of my scholars need to develop this fluency.
