My scholars are fearless, funny, and intelligent thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds. They never shy away from telling you how they feel or asking for help if they need it, and they are beginning to develop autonomy and crave independence as all teenagers do. This is the second year in a row that I have taught this group--95% of whom qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch and 99% of whom are Hispanic or African-American--and it has been a joy to see them mature and grow into young men and women. As scholars at a charter school in a low-income community in Texas, many of my scholars will--will, not would--be the first in their family to graduate from college, and the push this year in eighth grade is to prepare them for success in college preparatory high schools and beyond. They are the most hard-working group of scholars I have ever met, and I consider myself lucky to get to work with them every day.
