Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our district has been closed since March 13. All of my classroom supplies were left in the classroom. The students started distance learning March 30th. The process has been a struggle to meet the diverse population. Almost 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and many have family members that are healthcare workers. The students spend their days alone or taking care of siblings so their parents can work. Those parents then return home to then start homeschooling their children. There are other families that have had family members that have lost their jobs or gotten sick. Our city has the 3rd highest fatalities in the state. Everyday we hear about more families impacted by family illness and job loss.
My goal is to set up a virtual classroom to teach live classes.
The intention is to take some of the stress off of the families. If I am able to have a document reader, white board and supplies for a teaching set-up in my home, it will facilitate a learning environment for teaching students.
My Project
This project is for the purpose of replicating a math class virtually. Our students desperately need interaction with math material in order to fully understand the concepts. While in school, we would review content and then talk as a group. They would share ideas and strategies.
The class has changed and so instruction has to change.
However, with a live class, the students can get some of the interaction they are missing. The digital document camera will give me the opportunity to project myself, materials and record lesson for future use. The graphing whiteboard and tape can assist with teaching geometry and plotting rational numbers. The typical resources we take for granted in the classroom are greatly missed. The students will benefit from the opportunity to see them at home.
