Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have traveled and endured some of the greatest hardships known to man to begin the greatest journey of their lives. They are starting their education in English in the United States of America. The students in my class have arrived from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Congo, Sudan, and Somalia. These students are labeled as refugee students, but they are not a label to me. They are young minds thirsting for knowledge and the English language in their new school.
They are students that have had little or no opportunity to attend school in their home country.
Some children were born and raised in refugee camps. They have the largest struggle and biggest challenges in and out of the classroom. My students have overcome so many challenges and they show up daily to school to learn in a nurturing and safe environment. With the best resources and materials, I hope to see each and every one of my students graduate and hopefully attend college. Will you be apart of their journey?
My Project
The new millennium was ushered in by a dramatic technological revolution. We now live in an increasingly diverse, globalized, and complex, media-saturated society. According to Dr. Douglas Kellner at UCLA this technological revolution will have a greater impact on society than the transition from an oral to a print culture. Thus I feel it is necessary to integrate technology into educational programs and practices.
Data shows that students lack basic math skills in college and this was a serious issue we were concerned with.
For this reason, I wanted to provide my students with an iPad and case to provide the foundation they need to be successful in the 21st century. My students will use this iPad to access apps such as Math Fact Fluency which will provide instruction and practice to help students achieve automaticity of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. All work is recorded and viewable by the teacher. Math facts are introduced using authentic real-world scenarios that are meaningful to students, and fact practice is driven by an algorithm that selects facts based on prior student performance.
