My school is in a low income urban area. Many of my students are new English language learners, who gain language and kindergarten skills best through hands on, play based learning. Because of this I am wanting to develop math centers that will allow the students to practice new math skills in a collaborative group setting.
A variety of math counters will keep students engaged throughout the year as we tackle multiple math skills.
Unifix cubes can be used to sort colors, count, add, subtract, and cover numbers. Dinosaur and unicorn counters add variety to repetitive practice such as counting, sorting, and addition skills.
Stem items such as marble tracks and 3d model pieces teach spatial awareness, perseverance, and stamina. It gives students a safe place to tackle a challenge, fail, and try again. This allows us to teach growth mindset phrases, form discussions around the outcome and trouble shoot alternative ideas.
Play based math centers will not only help develop a positive relationship with math, but it will also build language and social skills. Thank you for helping our class develop a love of math and community!
