My students need math manipulatives and games to help make math more real and to provide them with a clearer understanding of how to solve the problem.
My students face many challenges each and every day. Many of them come from single parent households, face poverty on a daily basis, and are challenged with the violence of the inner city. I want my students to LOVE coming to school. I want them to feel comfortable, confident and ready for school
I teach in the inner city in Minnesota.
My fifth graders are awesome kids who really need a strong education to get out of their very tough situation. Most of my students are not legal citizens and face the hardships of never knowing when and if their family will be sent back to Mexico. I've been teaching for 18 years and I have dedicated my career to helping my students succeed. My motto is: If you believe it, you can achieve it! I truly believe my students will not only go to high school, but to college. However, I have a lot of work to do if I am going to help my students compete in the world with other, more advantaged students.
These math materials can make a huge difference with my students. My students need more hands-on materials that will build an understanding of math concepts. These materials may make the difference between my students truly loving math and understanding it at the same time.
My Project
Understanding math is something that is built upon. Many of my students have not been very successful in math in the past. Some of them do not have a very good attitude about math and feel like it is hopeless. I want to show them that little by little, they can improve their math computation and problem solving. Having fun, exciting materials helps engage my students and teaches them that they CAN be successful in math. It teaches them that all they need to do is try and have a positive attitude. I am asking for 4 digitz Multiplication Games (they are very helpful with helping kids learn their basic facts), a Guess My Number Pocket Chart (to help with problem solving) and six Operations Story Problems Flip Books (also to help with problem solving). These items WILL increase my students abilities and potentially give them the boost they may need.
This project is so important to me, because we always talk about closing the gap between minority students and more affluent students.
This is one thing we can do to even the field. Many kid have access to the Internet and/or have adults that can help them do their math. Many of my students do not. Some of their parents are illiterate and many of them have not been very successful in math. I want to change that pattern and show my students that they can be successful and have fun too!
