My students need Learning Wrap-Ups, Math Machines, posters, markers, communicator clearboards and other hands-on activities to reinforce the concepts they have learned in their Math Interventions class.
The students in my math intervention classes are students who struggle in the area of mathematics. They need a rich academic environment where they can take risks, practice challenging concepts, and track their progress. They need access to multiple, hands-on activities to support their learning.
Students in our school come from diverse backgrounds.
One-third of them qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. Many come from homes where other languages are spoken. Our school is a STEM school where the focus is on teaching through the lens of science, technology, engineering, and math. My students struggle in math and need specific interventions to help them succeed. The class I teach is in addition to their grade-level math class.
My Project
The Learning Wrap Ups and the Math Machines are fantastic resources which allow students to have individualized, hands-on practice. Students would set fluency goals, track their progress, and feel like they were taking "action," as well as taking responsibility for their learning. The multiple methods of understanding and reinforcing not-yet-mastered concepts will keep the practice fun and motivating. Students will be excited to come to such a dynamic classroom where instruction and learning are geared towards individual needs. What they write with, what activities they're engaged in, and even the walls will be informative and novel.
Many of my students have not responded well to traditional text books or worksheet exercises and will find the novelty of new, hands-on experiences to be just the motivation they need to keep trying.
New ways to practice their skills and improve their fluency will encourage them to participate and will lead to more learning in mathematics. Success in mathematics breeds a confidence like no other subject area. I want that for my students, and they deserve it!
