Math in Action! Bringing Math Workshop to Life through Books!
My students need to connect their math concepts with engaging picture books to be able to visualize the learning and see real-world examples of math in action!
Our school is full of amazing, intelligent, hard-working students. We have around 650 Kindergarten through 5th grade students ranging with very diverse backgrounds including 4 main languages spoken: English, Spanish, Marshallese, and Karin. We are a transient school, meaning many of our students move schools frequently and we have a highly migrant population. Our school population is around 70% English Language Learners and roughly 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Because of our highly mobile population, many of our students have "gaps" in their educational background stemming from moving schools multiple times over their brief elementary years.
Often times, our students are missing key concepts that will need an engaging approach to re-teach. With the introduction of a reading workshop that our school has adopted this year, the need for a math workshop approach has developed. As a math interventionist at our building, I would love to see a way to bridge these two subjects.
My Project
Having these sets of math picture books will help our students, many who are English Language Learners, see math in action. This will help bring a clear visual to the math concepts and cement the concept being taught.
Our school has seen success with a reading workshop approach and we are now developing a MATH workshop approach to help bridge math and literacy.
Many of our students live disjointed and chaotic home lives and being able to seamlessly weave our different subjects together at school will bring a cohesive plan to our math and literacy instruction. These math picture books are engaging, developmentally appropriate, educational, and fun!
