This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an incredible school! It is a richly diverse elementary school with passionate educators and staff. The economic disadvantages many of our students face, (82% free and reduced-price lunch rate), is countered by my school's emphasis on cultivating and honoring each child's individual gifts and talents while developing academic excellence and social-emotional strength. I have amazing students! My teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of valuing diversity and the unique contributions brought by each child. We learn through exploratory play, embedded instruction and focused lessons using culturally responsive teaching practices.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of math-based games to be used by students in my classroom during math rotations. When children are doing math, they are using problem-solving steps that fit into real-life situations. When students are learning their basic math facts and playing logic games, they are building the stepping stones to higher-level math concepts. They will have the opportunity to build stronger foundational math skills through sequencing puzzles and hands-on counting games. Children who have a lack of basic math fluency struggle more with multi-step problems and even basic problem-solving. We will be using these games in classrooms, intervention groups and math nights with families.
