Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income high poverty school district my students face challenges in and out of the classroom. An added challenge that my class faces is each of my students has a disability that hinders their abilities to access core materials at the same rate as their general education peers.
My class services students from kindergarten to fifth grade, with a range of disabilities, including emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, other health impairments, and specific learning disability.
The typical student in my class is two to three grade levels behind in reading and writing.
My Project
This upcoming school year will be my second year as a elementary teacher. I learned a lot from last year about the different needs that my students have. Teaching multiple grade levels makes it very challenging to have all the right materials for my students. I also have the additional challenge of teaching special education students who have learning disabilities. My students need multiple ways to access key math concepts and with our teacher budget being so small I need additional materials to help teach these concepts.
With the help from this project I will be able to use hands on activities and manipulatives to teach basic math concepts.
Many students struggle to learn, but the use of math games and centers makes it easier to learn. When students play games to learn they are highly motivated and engaged.
I will use the materials as small group rotations. Students will rotate in small groups of two-three, to different stations. The stations will focus on addition (using the hands on regrouping kit), subtraction (using the instant learning center) and money (using counting puzzles and grab and go money quickies). Another center will focus on using white boards and number lines to help with visualizing math equations. With the materials from this project students will be able to self check their work and also be able to work collaboratively with their peers.
