My students need to visit the Mississippi Children's Museum to experience real world math problems.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a teacher working in a low-income school district, my students are faced with many challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they still come to school with a smile, a great attitude, and are ready to do their best. They inspire me every day and I can see their leadership qualities showing through!
Just as they are giving their best every day, they deserve me putting my best efforts to secure the materials they need that will make their learning more engaging and successful.
While I would love to provide all of the extras they need out of the school budget, that is just not possible. These are great kids who deserve all of the supplies and materials that higher income schools can provide. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful that I can inspire our future leaders to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My student's will be visiting the Mississippi Children's Museum in Jackson, MS. Before the field trip, they will read the book "Math Curse" so they will have the required background to complete this activity. This field trip turns the museum into a giant series of word problems. Students will be given a booklet upon their arrival and they must work together throughout the museum to solve word problems using their math skills and concepts like geometry, fractions, and pre-algebra relating mathematic operations to daily life.
This field trip is essential to my students because they are able to experience hands-on math.
Being out of the classroom and in a museum where they can touch things, will allow them to experience things they may never get to do. I believe this field trip will be one they will remember.
