I teach twelve kindergarten students each year in cross categorical setting. This year, I am blessed to have a number of students who get excited about math activities and rally when it is time to come together to learn or review a math skill. This is an area of strength for many of my children who struggle with fine motor skills, social skills, language skills and early learning reading and writing skills. I want to celebrate their success with math and encourage each one to work as hard in other areas. I like to start each math lesson with literacy in the form of a math story. Everyday life is the basis for each of the stories that make simple math concepts real. Kindergarten early learning concepts might include: matching, sequencing, opposites, ordinal numbers, more and less, shapes, patterns, size, subtraction, odd and even and counting. Often, I find my children waiting patiently for the math book to end up in the reading center for them to explore and re-read and or a request for the same story day after day. I have a limited number of math stories available in my school library and must seek out the public library for additional titles. It is my wish to acquire some Math Big Book Sets for whole group and small group activities, as well as, some library-size books. Both size books are a great way to introduce children to early learning skills and concepts, and problem-solving methods. Thank you in advance for your generous contribution. Math does really count!
