Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 22 active and curious 4- and 5-year-old students. These students are English Language Learners in a Title I school where more than 95% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

My pre-k students are happy and excited to be in school.

Even though my students have challenges, I focus on each child's potential. I want to help my students develop and grow as much as possible during the time they are in my class. It is important for me to get them the resources they need to be the best learners they can be. I know that with a little support, my students will thrive.

Our students and their families suffered a great deal from Hurricane Harvey at the beginning of last school year. Many families lost homes and possessions due to the heaving flooding of the area. However, we are working hard to overcome the setbacks of last year by providing a safe and engaging learning environment for all learners.

My Project

I want to lay the foundation for a sound math education by making sure my students understand numbers. In order to understand numbers, children need to count objects every day.

I plan on using these counting boxes in our small groups throughout the entire school year.

Our math small groups consist of counting objects, developing one-to-one correspondence and understanding sets. These counting boxes have a variety of objects and counting mats to help students create sets and identify numbers. Once my students are counting with one-to-one correspondence, we will extend the activities to incorporate simple adding and subtracting. The use of concrete objects is essential to the success of my students.

I am also requesting pattern blocks, design cards and magnetic numbers to help me create fun independent learning centers to use during our math time.
