This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A new school year is a great place to start building communities in our classrooms. Because of the effects of the Pandemic on schooling, our students need extra opportunities to work together, collaborate, negotiate and build friendships. But there's no reason why this cannot be done during mathematics! Through a strategy called Counting Collections our students will work together on foundational math skills with many opportunities for a diverse learning group.
Our students will organize, count, draw and record, and persevere while counting a large collection of objects with a classmate.
They will share their work with the class, comment on each others' strategies and learn from each other too. While they revisit previously learned foundational skills and bridge to more advanced concepts, they become a community of mathematicians that respect and value each others' thinking.
