Math Club Popularity a Surprise!

The cost of a variety of math games, including Geometry Quest Card Set (from Nasco and Delta Education) is $508, including shipping and fulfillment.

Students at my K-5 school in San Francisco come from a variety of backgrounds and tend to start behind their peers in other schools when they enter kindergarten. By the time students get to my fifth grade class, they can still be missing big chunks of knowledge about math or simply lack the confidence that comes with repeated practice. This year, I decided to start a math club at recess to allow more time to practice math skills and do it in a fun environment. The math club is open to all fourth and fifth grade students who want to join. It meets twice a week at lunch recess (yes, the students choose math over recess, and so do I), and I have a variety of math games available for different ability levels and math skills. I was surprised by how many students wanted to join the club. About 20 out of 75 fourth and fifth graders currently participate. This is very exciting! To make the club more successful, I would like to have math games available for students to check out and take home to play. This will give much more time for practice and will reinforce the idea that learning math is fun. Many of my students are reluctant and anxious when it comes to math, and I love seeing them realize that they are smart and can have fun with math. The math games I would like to purchase will be lent for a week at a time. Students who borrow games responsibly will be able to borrow them again, and there will be a system to insure all students in the club have a chance to borrow a game.
