This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in New Orleans where the day-to-day challenges of the city surpass the classroom. I teach in a city where we sit as the 49th lowest academic performing state in America. I teach at a school wanting to give our kids the world, but we simply cannot do it financially.
The students I teach are the most amazing kids in the world.
I truly believe that. They are unique, they are smart, and they are going places. I also believe my students are also the most active kids in the world! I teach seventh and eighth grade special education math, and the majority of my students need small group instruction for attention, hyperactivity, and behavioral support.
My Project
We are a little more than halfway through the school year and classroom resources are dwindling down. Calculators in a math classroom are like bread and butter. My class set of calculators is beaten down and buttons are missing. Having a new set will allow students to use them for in-class assignments and tests. This is especially important for my classroom, as all of my students have a calculator accommodation.
We need pencils!
Class simply can not function without pencils. I don't know where the pencils go and how students continue to lose them, but we need more to write and show work.
Lastly, we need a new set of Expo markers for whiteboard practice and Gatorade as a part of our classroom reward system.
