Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This class makes every morning that I wake up, a day I look forward to being at work. I have a class of nine to twelve year old, fourth graders in a low income area of New York. This is my second year with this group of students. I have a large mix of students whose levels range from kindergarten to seventh grade. Many students are second language learners from countries such as Dominican Republic, Honduras, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Because of this, many of my students do not receive the support they need at home.
Additionally, more than one third of our general education class has an IEP and receives special education services.
The various disabilities range from reading processing issues, to delays in speech, to autism. This class can be challenging at times, but the students are kind and supportive of one another like a family.
My Project
I would love to be able to provide my students with a math center that they can really count on. I would like to include flip books for fractions, math journals for daily problem solving practice, as well as hands-on activities to support multiplication and division strategies.
By providing my students with flip books for fractions, they will be able to better understand fractions.
They will also be more able to compare and contrast fraction values. As their fraction fluency increases, they will increase their ability to add and subtract with fractions.
They will also benefit from math journals used daily. The best way to get better at anything is to practice, so providing students who would not be able to afford a journal specific to problem solving, will help them with problem solving in other areas of their lives. Many students in my class have special needs, so it will be important for them to be able to have a visual support to ensure success.
Likewise, those same students will benefit from hands-on support of division and multiplication strategies. By providing them with these supports, their math fluency will greatly improve.
